Archaeologists discovered in January a woolly mammoth tusk in S\u0103poca, Buz\u0103u county. After the discovery was confirmed, the piece was taken to the Buz\u0103u County Museum for primary conservation and is being analyzed by researchers from the University of Bucharest. <\/p>\n

Dating from the late Pleistocene period, it is the only object of its kind in the museum’s patrimony, and the discovery is all the more important as it represents a rarity in the south and south-east of Romania.<\/p>\n

After the physical and chemical cleaning, stabilization and consolidation treatments followed, which lasted several weeks, according to the representatives of the Buz\u0103u County Museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as it was possible, we set about making a stand to display the large ivory,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n

The next step was to challenge the students of the \u201cMargareta Sterian\u201d Art High School to realize a 1:1 replica of the S\u0103poca discovery. So, for several weeks, a group of students, under the coordination of teacher Ciprian Dominoschi, have been working on this project, as part of the \u201cArtCreator\u201d program. <\/p>\n

The original piece and the replica will be presented publicly on European Museum Night on May 17, the museum adds.<\/p>\n
