It opens in September and brings works by Pablo Picasso from the Musée Picasso, Antibes collection to Timișoara for the first time.

Painting, graphic art, and ceramics come together in this exhibition, an international project that opens a new chapter in the Foundation’s work.

“This exhibition has a twofold purpose: to introduce the public to one of the most influential figures in modern art, as controversial as they are significant in 20th-century art, and the opening of an art center dedicated entirely to contemporary art, capable of hosting exhibitions that meet international museum standards, extensive educational programs, and new forms of dialogue with the public,” says Diana Marincu, artistic director of Art Encounters.

Approximately 70 works of painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics

Curated by Jean-Louis Andral, director of the Musée Picasso in Antibes, the exhibition brings together 69 works by the artist, focusing on his creative years in the south of France. Beyond the artist’s established image, the selection explores the freedom of his brushwork and the way Picasso moves across painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics in a continuous process of reinvention. Mythological motifs, hybrid figures, and transformed forms reveal an experimental artist who is surprisingly contemporary.

After his stay at the Château Grimaldi in Antibes, Picasso donated the works he had created there to the city, and in 1966 the building became the Musée Picasso, the world’s first museum dedicated to the artist, and its collection remains one of the most important testaments to the freedom Picasso embraced throughout his life and career.

The New Art Encounters Space

The new Art Encounters art center is the result of an extensive modernization process carried out in collaboration with Attila Kim Architects.

Designed to meet international museum standards, the new space combines exhibition halls, areas for interdisciplinary projects and educational programs, a bookstore, a café, and an urban garden, serving as an open platform for gathering, learning, and cultural exploration.

The “Picasso en visite” exhibition will be open to the public from September 17, 2026, to January 17, 2027. Tickets will be available starting in July 2026 through the dedicated online platforms.
