Aurora Király in MoMA collection

Aurora Király’s “Viewfinder #13” from her series of the same name, presented at Paris Photo in 2024, has been bought by the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA).

The announcement was made by Anca Poterașu Gallery and represents a significant moment in Romanian artist’s career.

“Viewfinder is not just a series of images, but a reflection on how we perceive and reconstruct memories, the artist explains. It’s a deeply introspective body of work that revisits the artist’s archive of photographs, with images captured some two decades ago. Recorded in the late 1990s and early 2000s, these reflective images document the artist’s interest in space, identity and the photographic process. Whether taken in the studio, during artist residencies or while traveling, these works invite the viewer into a layered dialog between past and present, memory and perception.

Aurora Király (b. 1970, Romania) is an artist working at the intersection of photography, textile art, drawing and installation. Her works are part of important collections such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest, the Contemporary Art Collection of the European Parliament, as well as private collections in Europe and North America.
Recently, she has participated in artist-in-residencies at Kunsthalle Mulhouse (2024) and the Boghossian Foundation at Villa Empain, Brussels (2022). Aurora Király explores how the mind records, relives and remembers experiences. She is interested in investigating feminist theories in relation to the process of identity construction and the status of women in society. Her work reflects complex connections between events and intersections between the public and private spheres of human experience.
