County Museum of Art “Baia Mare Artistic Center”

The Baia Mare Art Museum is unique in Romania, being exclusively dedicated to the works of the artists who worked in the Baia Mare Art Colony, founded in 1896 by Simion Hollosy. It is one of the longest-lived and most famous European art centers, hosting over 3,000 artists over a century. Housed in a historic monument dating back to 1784, the museum, appreciated by art enthusiasts from the country and beyond, exhibits over 250 works by internationally recognized artists, as well as rare pieces of European and Romanian modern art from the 18th to 20th centuries, presented in temporary exhibitions.

Baia Mare Village Museum

The Village Museum of Baia Mare presents the traditional life of four ethnographic areas in the north of Romania: Chioarului Country, Lapus Country, Codrului Country and Maramures Country. Here, visitors can discover the specific architectural features of each region through traditional farmsteads, adapted to the main occupations, such as agriculture, viticulture or fruit growing. The museum also exhibits authentic technical installations: oloinițe, pive and water mills. As an open-air section of the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art of Maramureș, this space revives the charm of rural life in an authentic and historically rich setting.

County Museum of Mineralogy “Victor Gorduza”

The museum represents a unique landmark in Europe, being dedicated to the mineral heritage of Maramureș, so it is one of those places you must visit in Baia Mare. Officially founded in 1992, it has a history dating back to the 1960s, through the vision of Professor Victor Gorduza. Housing over 1,000 exhibits in the permanent exhibition and another 15,000 in the collections, the museum impresses with “mine flowers” unique worldwide. Structured around five main collections (minerals, rocks, fossils, ores and generals), the museum creates a connection between science, art and education. Since 2011, a modern building has expanded its functionality to include conference rooms and temporary exhibitions.

Maramureș County Museum of History and Archaeology

One of the oldest museums in Baia Mare, it was founded in 1904, thanks to the historian Schönherr Gyula. Housed in the city’s former mint and in the Butchers’ Bastion, the museum showcases a vast heritage of over 75,000 pieces. Permanent exhibitions, such as “Treasures of the Bronze Age” and “Mining and Civilization in Maramureș,” retrace the history of the region. A special attraction is the clock collection, fascinating for its diversity and uniqueness. The museum also runs educational programs and is an important cultural and historical center of Maramureș.

Butchers’ Bastion

The Butchers’ Bastion, part of the medieval defense system of Baia Mare, was built around 1547 with the approval of King Matei Corvin. The circular tower, made of stone with walls one meter thick, had two levels: one for storing ammunition and the other equipped with ramparts for defense. Also known as the “Tower of Ammunition,” the bastion was defended by the butchers’ guild, the largest and most influential guild in the city. Located at the city’s South Gate, the Butchers’ Bastion remains a symbol of Baia Mare’s military history and guild tradition and is on the list of Baia Mare’s must-see attractions.

Gheza Vida Memorial Museum

The list of museums in Baia Mare also includes the Memorial Museum (also known as the Memorial Workshop) “Gheza Vida”. It was inaugurated in 2013 in the Historical Center of Baia Mare, to honor the life and work of the great sculptor (1913-1980), one of the most valuable artists of post-war Romania. Born in Baia Mare, Vida drew inspiration from the traditions and mythology of the Maramureș region, creating works such as “Dans Oșenesc”, “Monumentulilor Țăranilor Martiri de la Moisei” and “Sfatul Bătrânilor”. His memorial workshop and his works exhibited in the city and in museums across the country reflect his deep connection with popular culture and his exceptional talent, recognized nationally and internationally.

UAP Baia Mare Art Gallery

UAP Baia Mare Art Gallery is an exhibition space dedicated to visual art, organizing temporary, solo and group exhibitions. Here, visitors can admire and purchase works by professional artists who are members of the Baia Mare Fine Artists Union and UAP Romania. The gallery promotes special cultural events such as the “Celebration of the Arts”, a collective exhibition with open sale organized annually. The gallery also includes a commercial space with professional art products, supporting the creativity and inspiration of the artistic community.

EleoNora Art Gallery

EleoNora Art Gallery is a space dedicated to the organization of exhibition events for artists who wish to exhibit their creations. Founded out of a deep desire to explore beauty and sensitivity, the gallery reflects painter EleoNora Florian’s passion for art, developed following a personal moment of personal crossroads. Graduated with a Masters in Visual Arts, the artist has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, creative camps and collective events.
