First Brancusi exhibition in Germany in half a century
The largest retrospective of Constantin Brâncuși’s work in Germany is being organized this year in Berlin by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
From March 20 to August 9, the Neue Nationalgalerie is hosting more than 150 sculptures, photographs, films and archival material. The works come from the Pompidou but also from private and public collections worldwide. A special highlight is the partial reconstruction of his famous studio, exhibited outside Paris for the first time in seven decades.
Constantin Brâncuși (1876 – 1957) is considered one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. After starting with traditional academic training, he developed his own distinctive style in Paris from 1907. His organic forms, reduced to their essence, established him as a pioneer of sculptural abstractionism in the early 20th century. His continuous search for an artistic ideal is reflected in the formal variations of several central motifs and his use of different materials and surfaces.
The Brâncuși exhibition in Berlin is the first in Germany in more than 50 years. It is curated by Klaus Biesenbach and Maike Steinkamp of the Neue Nationalgalerie and Ariane Coulondre and Valérie Loth of the Centre Pompidou Paris.
It is held under the joint patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French President Emmanuel Macron.
2026 is Brancusi Year, marking the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birth. In Rome, Romania’s National Museum of Art will organize the exhibition “Brâncuși: The Origins of Infinity”, conceived as an incursion into the matrix of modernist creativity. No major events have yet been announced in the country. The National Museum “Constantin Brâncuși” in Târgu Jiu will host the first edition of the “Constantin Brâncuși” Sculpture Triennial, an event with international participation, and the third edition of the “Constantin Brâncuși” International Biennial of Graphic Arts and scientific conferences with the participation of representatives of the Romanian Academy will be organized.
