The first child bust sculpted by Constantin Brâncuși, exclusively at Artmark Galleries
The first child bust signed by Constantin Brâncuși, sculpted in 1906, is on show exclusively at Artmark Galleries to mark the 149th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
“Bust of a Child” is on display at the Cesianu-Racoviță Palace in Bucharest from February 19 to February 23 and can be seen daily, from Monday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 20:00, with free admission.
“Enfant” (“Bust de copil”) is the first of a series of sculptures dedicated to children by Constantin Brâncuși after he moved to Paris in 1904.
“The Artmark Galleries’ homage exhibition features “Bust of a Child,” the first sculpture in the series, a patinated plaster that the artist presented at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1906. A photograph signed by Brâncuși on which he notes the title “L’Enfant” (Salon de 1906 Paris) marks this achievement, which becomes very important in his development, because on this date he is noticed by the members of the jury: Rodin, Bourdelle, Maillol and Medardo Rosso – the latter being very sensitive to the rendering of the psychology of children. After a long series of busts of people from his Parisian entourage, some of whom were known only from studio photographs, Brancusi sculpted busts of children whom he had probably observed in Place Dauphine, where he had just settled in October 1905. For him, these works were exercises that evoked the rules of his training at the National School of Fine Arts in Bucharest and enabled him to take part in group exhibitions and the Paris Sculpture Salons,” explains Doina Lemny, art historian, researcher specialized in the work of the sculptor Constantin Brâncuși and one of the best-known exegetes of the great artist’s work.
During this period, Constantin Brancusi is being honored with various events both at home and abroad.
