
The most expensive Grigorescu on auction at Alis in early March
The most expensive painting by Nicolae Grigorescu auctioned by Alis is “Woman Sewing/ Femeie cosând”, a small oil on cardboard, which is on sale on 2 March.
The 25.5x32cm painting, unsigned, was bought in the early 20th century by Stelian Popescu, the owner of the newspaper Universul, and was featured in the exhibition “N. Grigorescu – The Master of Câmpina”, which opened in 2006 at the Cotroceni National Museum, and was reproduced in its catalogue.
The starting price for the artwork is 650,000 lei. So far, the most expensive Grigorescu sold at Alis is “Care cu boi”, oil on canvas measuring 50×69 cm, which was auctioned on March 28, 2021 against the amount of 101,600 euros (about 500,000 lei).
In the same auction of paintings and graphics, which includes 49 lots, there are, among others, “Picking Apples” by Arthur Verona, oil on plywood with a starting price of 20,000 lei, “Confession”, oil on cardboard by Nicu Enea, and “Milan”, oil and pencil on canvas glued on cardboard by Rudolf Schweitzer Cumpăna, each from 9,000 lei, and “Boats at shore”, oil on cardboard by Samuel Mutzner, from 7,500 lei.
The Sculpture segment of the auction includes “Dacian Altar” – a reduction of the stone monument from the Căsoaia sculpture camp. The 87 cm high work in stainless steel, unsigned, has a starting price of 10,000 lei.
Four works are included in the Living Artists segment, and the highest starting price of 5,000 lei went to “Untitled” (2005), a collage by Francisc Chiuariu.
