Virtual Museum of Art under Communism
The Virtual Museum of Art under Communism (Muzeul Virtual al Artei sub Comunism) has been launched by the Art Museum Brasov, in partnership with the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile (IICCMER).
The Virtual Museum of Art under Communism is a digital platform dedicated to the recovery, reinterpretation and valorization of the artistic heritage created in Romania between 1948 and 1989. The project brings into the public space an essential, but insufficiently known, segment of visual history, bringing together in an accessible and interactive framework more than 500 works from the collection of the Brașov Art Museum, along with research materials, thematic analysis and educational resources. The platform includes profiles of the artists whose works have been digitized, providing brief biographical information about their professional careers.
By digitizing and contextualizing this heritage, the virtual museum offers a nuanced perspective on the complex relationship between art, power and individual experiences during the communist period.
The virtual museum functions as a dynamic space of knowledge, reflection and cultural participation, offering open access to the general public, pupils, students and researchers. The platform will continue to develop by integrating new material, research and curatorial perspectives, consolidating itself as a sustainable tool for exploring Romanian art from the communist period and for understanding the historical and cultural contexts that shaped it.
The website is part of the project “Virtual Museum of Art under Communism. Perspectives on a controversial heritage”, realized by the Art Museum Brasov in partnership with IICCMER and co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund.
