Yvonne Hasan and Alma Redlinger, at Sector 1 Gallery
Works by artists Yvonne Hasan (1925 – 2016) and Alma Redlinger (1924 – 2017) are on display at the Sector 1 Gallery at Combinatul Fondului Plastic from July 10 to August 23.
“The Soft Geometry of Color/ Geometria moale a coloreorii”, curated by Norbert Filep, brings the artistic world of the two into focus.
What is striking in these two artistic approaches is a subtle, inherent complementarity that runs through the subjects, conceptual space and formal aspects of the works. The nature of this subtlety bears the imprint of a distant history. It can be traced back to the formative period of the two, more precisely to the connections and practices of a late avant-garde, specific to the pedagogy of M. H. Maxy at the Art School for Jews, founded in 1941 in Bucharest.
The nature of this subtlety is closely linked to the anachronism marked by the fidelity and consistency of a stylistic trajectory derived from the early years of this school. With fluctuations in both practices – more prominent in the case of Yvonne Hasan due to the intersection between art, theory and philosophy -, the specificity of a soft modernism dominates the two creative strategies. Here, freedom and devotion to color, geometry, pictoriality and subject remain intact as a way of thinking, unaltered by the myriad new artistic directions of the past seven decades, the exhibition presentation states.
