Photographs by Tillmans, last Centre Pompidou Paris exhibition before renovation
Photographs by Wolfgang Tillmans over the past thirty-five years of young Germans, still lifes and protests are on display in the vast library of the Centre Pompidou from 13 June to 22 September 2025.
The exhibition is not conceived as a retrospective and, according to Pompidou, it is nothing like a traditional museum exhibition.
This is the last major exhibition at the Centre Pompidou Paris before it closes for five years for renovation work.
Wolfgang Tillmans, one of today’s most influential photographers, works in Berlin and London. About three years ago he had a major travelling retrospective at MoMA New York, Art Gallery Ontario and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Tillmans, born 16 August 1968, has photographed in almost every genre. He became known for his striking images in the 1990s, then photographed still life, nudes, documentary and abstract photography, among others. His chosen subjects include German nightlife, the queer community and nature. He has also used the camera to document his HIV-positive life.
