The George Severeanu Museum – The collection of a radiologist with a passion for antiques / photo gallery
Original custom-made furniture, rare books, and archaeological and numismatic heritage objects are part of the collection of radiologist George Severeanu, the first director of the Bucharest Municipality Museum (MMB).
Ancient Greek vases, clay statuettes, bronze and marble objects, Roman glassware, ancient gems and cameos, ceramics belonging to the Cucuteni, Vădastra, Wietenberg, and Boian cultures stand alongside one of the most valuable numismatic collections in Romania, consisting of approximately 9,000 pieces from different historical periods.
The house at 26 Henri Coandă Street, which houses the museum, was the residence of George and Maria Severeanu and dates back to the second half of the 19th century. It was restored in the 1990s, and currently, in addition to the “Maria and Dr. George Severeanu” collection, here is presented the exhibition “Greeks from across the seas. Red-figure pottery from Etruria and Magna Graecia” („Grecii de peste mări. Ceramică cu figuri roșii din Etruria și Magna Grecia”).
The entire collection was donated to the MMB in 1939, after George Severeanu’s death, and the museum was established in 1956. It can be visited from Wednesday to Sunday, between 10:00 and 17:30.
