Works by Ghenie on show for the first time at the Brukenthal National Museum
Paintings by the artist Adrian Ghenie from the collection of Zenoviu Haiduc will be exhibited for the first time this year at the Brukenthal National Museum.
The exhibition will feature works reflecting a wide range of approaches, from the neo-avant-garde of the 1960s to experimental practices of new generations. The artists include Ion Grigorescu, Hortensia Mi Kafchin, Victor Man, Ciprian Mureșan, Codruța Cernea, Lorena Cocioni, Adrian Ganea, Simion Cantemir Hausi, Georgeta Năpăruș, Victor Ciato, Șerban Savu and many others, the museum announces.
The works in this collection and the curatorial approach invite the public to a continuous dialog between past and present, where collective memories and artistic visions are redefined.
Event within SCAF – Sibiu Contemporary Art Festival
Rated as one of the best-selling contemporary Romanian artists in the world, Adrian Ghenie stands out for his work regardless of the techniques he uses. In 2001, the artist graduated from the University of Art and Design in Cluj, acquiring the technique and execution skills corresponding to classicism. With the discovery of the avant-garde, there will be a major paradigm shift in his work.
In 2005, together with his colleague Mihai Pop, he founded the gallery Plan B in Cluj-Napoca, which was to become one of the epicenters of artistic life in the city. The gallery then expanded to Berlin. In 2007, Plan B Gallery organizes the Romanian pavilion of the Venice Biennale, and in 2015, Adrian Ghenie represents Romania at the 56th edition of the Biennale with the project “Darwin’s Room”.
With impressive prices at domestic and international auctions, the paintings of Adrian Ghenie can be found in reputable collections such as Centre Pompidou, Paris; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst (S.M.A.K), Ghent; Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; ‘Centro de Arte Contemporaneo, Malaga; Francois Pinault Collection, Venice; Hort Family Collection, New York and many others.
“This exhibition is one of the most important dedicated to Romanian contemporary art that has been organized so far in Sibiu. There are many contemporary artists. We will also be able to see works by the most important and fashionable contemporary Romanian artists. The presence of the paintings signed by Adrian Ghenie is a premiere and I thank the collector Zenoviu Haiduc, as well as the artist, for the fact that Sibiu and the Brukenthal National Museum will host this exhibition. It is a first important action that will be included in SCAF – Sibiu Contemporary Art Festival”, says Alexandru Constantin Chituță, the museum’s manager.
